Description

The Intelligent Systems Research and Development Support (ISRDS) contract supports NASA Ames Research Center in developing and infusing advanced information systems technology into NASA missions. Our scientists, engineers and information technologists support research and development of critical enabling intelligent technologies for all of the NASA Mission Directorates.

The Computational Materials Group of the Thermal Protection Materials Branch conducts multiscale modeling and simulation of materials and systems to enable the rational design, prediction and certification of materials and systems for NASA applications.  NASA’s needs for high performance materials necessitate the development of advanced computational tools to accelerate the design cycle and reduce the cost and inefficiency of traditional, empirically driven approaches.  Materials are intrinsically complex, multiscale objects and therefore require a corresponding multiscale modeling framework to enable high fidelity predictions.  Such a framework utilizes computational chemistry, ab initio simulations, molecular dynamics simulations as well as multiphysics modeling capabilities.   This approach is general and can be applied to a range of NASA applications. 

The objective of this position is to study the electrolyte decomposition chemistry of lithium-oxygen batteries.  The critical bottleneck to making progress in advanced battery technologies such as lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries is mitigating the severe electrolyte decomposition.  In this research, computational chemistry will be used to model basic electrolyte decomposition mechanisms in order to design more stable electrolytes for Li-O2 batteries.   This task will involve collaboration and regular interactions with members of the Computational Materials Group and with external partners at NASA GRC and UC Berkeley.

This position requires access to ITAR and/or EAR protected data, only U.S. citizens or green card holders can be considered for this position

Required Skills and Traits:

  • Strong research background in Quantum Chemistry

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including demonstrated ability to publish top-tier peer-reviewed articles.

  • Experience with common electronic structure codes (evidenced by puiblications)

Other Desired Skills (Skills other than those required to meet the minimum requirements for the job)

  • Excellent programming skills

  • Experience with molecular dynamics simulations
