Overview

The Research Scientist (RS) will advise clients to design and conduct studies, interpret data, prepare reports and conduct data research using standard and innovative scientific principles, theories, concepts, and techniques for clients’ health-related missions. Focus areas may include:

  • Cost and utilization metrics associated with healthcare claims (Medicare Fee for Service, Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug claims)
  • Medicare Provider and Beneficiary enrollment
  • Clinical terminology and related taxonomy and ontological concept mappings
  • Utilization of the Medicare services
  • Quality and outcomes of Medicare services
  • Models to detect fraud, waste and abuse in the Medicare program

 

The RS will exhibit ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness in the application and/or development of significantly advanced technologies, scientific principles, theories and concepts. The RS will think and act independently to identify and resolve problems associated with the development and implementation of programs in order to advise clients. The RS will also serve as consultant to Index Analytics management in long-range planning pertaining to new or projected areas for technical development or advancement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform data analysis and prepare, review and/or approve highly complex reports
  • Plan and lead highly complex and advanced technical projects and develop sound experimental techniques for scientific studies
  • Communicate findings to clients and scientific audiences, through both oral presentations and written reports and manuscripts
  • Coach client personnel and peers to conduct research and analysis activities that support their mission objectives.
  • Train and mentor junior technical staff in technical interpretation of complex data, and ensure the technical procedures used for testing/research within the group are current and valid
  • Use data tools (such as SAS, SQL, R or Python) or work with programmers who use the tools to perform the data analysis and build the reports to identify trends and patterns
  • Assist in information modeling and mapping CPT/HCPCS procedure codes to taxonomy and ontological concepts
  • Assist in preparing cost and schedule estimates on proposed projects
  • Provide competent technical advice to management
  • Interface with inter-departmental scientists, data collection technicians and clients for smooth project completion

Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant discipline preferred; Master's degree in a relevant discipline required
  • Ability to obtain Public Trust level clearance
  • Demonstrated experience managing or serving in a critical role on complex multi-year programs
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent written and oral communication required
  • Willingness to serve in cross functional roles as needed to ensure business continuity
  • Experience working with Medicare claims and utilization and enrollment data preferred
  • Awareness of Medicare payment and reimbursement systems and claims processing lifecycle preferred
  • Awareness of clinical workflow processes, clinical vocabularies, terminologies, coding and classification systems preferred
