Job Summary;

Support the development and implementation of human factors research at the MedStar Health Services Research Network (MHSRN) to contribute to advancing the health of our patients while impacting all aspects in our tripartite mission of education, research and clinical care. 
 
As a researcher at MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI), this position will become a critical part of the successful team at MHSRN, expanding upon the current research activities in care delivery. The Research Scientist will design and direct research studies in human factors and cognitive science, including pursuing an independent program of research, partnering with MHRI investigators to incorporate human factors in research proposals, obtaining external financial support for research (sponsored research) to ensure long term sustainability of the  MHSRN, closely coordinating and aligning the research activities with the clinical activities within MedStar Health, and participate in activities aimed at increasing the awareness of human factors throughout the system. Activities may cross multiple sites, as well as involve investigators at different locations and within different disciplines.

Minimum Qualifications:
          Education:PhD, DrPH, or equivalent terminal degree in cognitive science, human factors, psychology, or a related field.

 

  • Experience:  The ideal candidate has at least 1 year of experience in human factors research or equivalent research field. Experience working within a healthcare system (hospital, ambulatory care environment, outpatient clinics) strongly preferred.   Minimum of 1 year of experience in applying human factors research, and working on grant funded research teams. Experience in presentation of scientific information with excellent oral and written communication skills required. Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.

The successful candidate must be facile in methods specific to human factors, with demonstrated success employing these methods for systems improvement, clinician performance, and patient comprehension focused research projects. The candidate should be someone who focuses primarily on human factors approaches to interventions focused on performance improvement. Must have 1-2 years experience with quantitative and qualitative methods. .
 
 
 
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Create, develop, and continue to build a personal portfolio of human factors research at the MedStar Health Services Research Network that furthers MedStar’s mission of advancing health through evidence-based research on the delivery of care.

  2. Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of human factors research studies. Approaches may include observational studies and interventions aimed at improving healthcare systems, clinician performance, and patient outcomes.

  3. Collaborate with scientists from MedStar Health Services Research Network, Georgetown University, and the MedStar Health Research Institute to produce human factors research advancements.

  4. Participate in meetings, serve on committees and represent the network, MHRI and MedStar Health in community outreach efforts as appropriate.

  5.  Manage research budgets to meet the scope of work.

  6. Develop a personal portfolio of research that establishes recognition of that work and results in publications in peer reviewed journals.

  7. Develop a personal portfolio that establishes recognition of that work and results in presentations and speaking opportunities at national and international meetings.

  8. Collaborate with other disciplines within MedStar Health to design and evaluate the impact of human factors initiatives.

  9. Supervises research staff.

  10. Consistently demonstrate support for compliance in the performance of job duties and responsibilities by a) developing and maintaining knowledge of, and performing job functions in compliance with, rules, regulations, policies, and statutes that affect his/her job; b) maintaining knowledge of and performing job functions in compliance with MedStar Health policies and procedures; and c) reporting compliance concerns in an appropriate and timely manner.

  11. Perform other duties as needed or assigned.
