A postdoctoral position is available at Harvard to work on MethaneSAT (https://www.methanesat.org; launch 2022) in the near term. The research involves developing scientific and operational code for satellite data analysis.  The MethaneSAT work is to participate in the development of retrievals in the shortwave infrared for CH4 and other gases worldwide, and in the inversion of abundance determinations to obtain source strengths. It will include participation in airborne measurements by MethaneSAT’s testbed instrument MethaneAIR, used to develop the XCH4 algorithm for MethaneSAT before its launch. The research involves improving atmospheric spectral fitting, inversion, radiative transfer modeling, instrument calibration, and validation of measurements.

Basic Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, or a related field.
  2. Strong background in remote sensing of atmospheric trace gases, spectroscopy, and radiative transfer modeling.
  3. Excellent programming skills (e.g., Fortran) and shell scripting under Unix/Linux environments, and extensive plotting and mapping capabilities are crucial.
  4. Excellent communication skills and good track record of writing scientific papers.

Harvard University is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions, or any other characteristic protected by law.
