Job Summary

The Department of Biostatistics at the University of Michigan invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral fellow to work on statistical methods for the harmonization of electronic health record data together with Dr. Xu Shi  (Department of Biostatistics - University of Michigan), Dr. Jennifer Nelson  (Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute), and Dr. Patrick Heagerty  (Department of Biostatistics - University of Washington).

The project is funded by the FDA Sentinel Initiative , a national effort that leverages large, multi-site electronic health record data to transform how the safety of FDA-regulated products is monitored, with a diverse team of investigators from University of Michigan, Kaiser Permanente Washington, University of Washington, Kaiser Permanente Northwest, Harvard University, Duke University, Vanderbilt University, and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

The focus of this project is on developing data-driven statistical methods and computational tools for reducing heterogeneity in medical coding across healthcare systems and ultimately facilitating high-quality transfer of knowledge learned from one data partner to another. Findings will pave the way towards scalable and automated harmonization of electronic health record data across Sentinel data partners that will facilitate FDA’s ability to address regulatory science questions and ultimately promote public safety.

The position is based in the Department of Biostatistics at University of Michigan. Remote work is allowable during COVID-19 restrictions.

The start date is June 1st, 2021.

You will be expected to collaborate with the research team to develop and apply statistical methods and computational tools for the harmonization of electronic health records data, present updates/progress at regular workgroup meetings with the FDA, write manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, disseminate research findings at professional conferences. We encourage you to bring in your own novel research ideas.

Postdoctoral research fellows are appointed in one year terms. This position is expected to be funded for two years based on available funding and performance.

Required Qualifications*
