The University of Virginia seeks an Advising Coordinator to support the Department of Computer Science within the School of Engineering and Applied Science.  The Advising Coordinator will advise undergraduate students and also support faculty members advising students. They will play a lead role in department efforts to help students succeed in their academics as well as have opportunities for co-curricular experiences that support career goals. Advising responsibilities may address academic requirements and policies, major declarations, supporting newly-declared majors, diversity, outreach, supporting pre-majors, and student engagement activities. They will collaborate with department faculty members and other university offices and staff to achieve these goals for students in the department. They may supervise student support staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise computing majors about curriculum, course selection, academic requirements, and progress toward degree completion.

  • Monitor students’ academic progress and identify and help support at-risk students.

  • Coordinate activities to enhance student success and engagement, including co-curricular experiences that support career goals.

  • Participate in outreach and diversity efforts.

  • Respond to the needs of non-majors interested in computing, including the major declaration process and orientation for newly-declared majors (including transfer students).

  • Collaborate with department faculty members, other advisors and student support staff throughout the university.

  • Assist in tracking student data for the department (e.g. number of majors, graduation rates).

  • Incorporate the use of best practices in the area of student advising and support learned through interactions with the professional community, attending conferences, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least four years of relevant experience required.

  • A master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, or related field preferred.

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of student development theory and practice.

  • Demonstrated commitment to student success.

  • Ability to as a team and independently in a constantly changing environment.

  • Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.

This position does require the willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends.
