A postdoctoral researcher position is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Lufang Zhou in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (https://scholars.uab.edu/display/lzhou11). This NIH-funded project aims to develop innovative mitochondrial-targeted therapies for the treatment of heart disease. Loss of mitochondrial function has been implicated in the pathogenesis of heart failure; however, our knowledge about the role of cardiomyocyte mitochondria in pathological cardiac remodeling during heart failure development remains limited. Our laboratory has developed an innovative mitochondrial-targeted optogenetic approach capable of specifically and dynamically controlling cardiomyocyte mitochondria both ex vivo and in vivo. This project will employ this approach to induce gain or loss of cardiomyocyte mitochondrial function, and explore the therapeutic or pathological effect on cardiac functions.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with the UAB guidelines for Postdoctoral researchers.
1) Candidates must have a doctoral level degree (MD and/or PhD) in physiology, biomedical science, biomedical engineering, biology, or a related field.
2) The ideal applicant should be creative, motivation driven, and capable of working independently.
3) In addition to strong cell and molecular biology skills, individuals with experience in rodent handling and surgery, cell and tissue imaging/microscopy, or mitochondrial biology are strongly encouraged to apply.
4) A background in optogenetics, while useful, is not essential.
5) The ideal candidate will be dedicated to basic research with strong analytical and communication skills.
