The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Senior Research Associate to serve as a member of the laboratory team in the Center for Genomic and Precision Medicine.  We desire an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated above. The successful applicant will bring their experience to the position and understand the demands of supporting executives in a fast-paced environment. Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate bachelor’s degree in biological science.

  • Four years of relevant professional experience. Master’s degree is equivalent to two years of experience.

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines.


Other Requirements or Other Factors:

  • Occasional weekend and after-hours work may be necessary.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in biological science or microbiological sciences.

  • Molecular and cellular biology research (perform PCR, Western blot, reverse transcription and qPCR, primary and cell line cell culture, DNA, RNA, protein extraction.

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities.

Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of molecular cloning to generate, construct and experience in adenovirus application.

  • Mouse heart dissection, processing, and staining; embryo dissection, Langendorff perfusion, open chest microsurgeries (e.g., transverse aortic constriction), echocardiographic operation and data analysis, and primary cardiomyocyte isolation; experience with rat handling and physiology. 

  • Immunohistochemistry staining including IF and regular H&E histology staining in cell and animal tissues.

  • Mouse physiology, genetics, biology, and development experiments including mouse breeding, genotyping, and tail vein injection.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs professional, technical, administrative, and managerial research work. 

  • Performs independent or supervisory roles in research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in biological science, are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent use of discretion and judgment. 

  • Supervision of graduate students and other lab personnel in research. 

  • Responsible for designing, planning, conducting, and coordinating experiments in support of various research projects.

  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques of the research. 

  • Operate all the instrumentation needed for projects (training will be provided as needed).

  • Prepare reagents and solutions and perform experimental work and bioinformatics analysis as needed.

  • Optimize novel assays and protocols under the team guidance.

  • Maintain laboratory organization; monitor lab reagents and ordering; trouble shoot problematic results. 

  • Establish, install, maintain, operate and/or repair research equipment. 

  • Document experimental procedures in precise detail.

  • Keep detailed records of data.

  • Use computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results.

  • Coordinates the review of the work of research staff.

  • Directly interact and report to the PI.

  • Summarize results for inclusion in scientific and clientele-oriented publications. 

  • Prepare and write proposals to funding agencies.

  • Participate in lab meetings within the center and other departments. 

  • Participate in joint projects involving the laboratory team.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
