Job Summary

The Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases (IID) focuses on the biological, immunological, epidemiological and ecological aspects of viral, bacterial and protozoan diseases of animals and humans, including the vectors that transmit infectious agents. Research in the department's 12 laboratories is primarily focused on diseases of developing countries.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

As part of the Catteruccia laboratory, the successful candidate will support our research focusing on parasite-vector interactions. The Research Assistant will help in the development and testing of new chemical interventions for parasite control in mosquitoes with the ultimate goal of developing innovative malaria control strategies.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversees mosquito maintenance
  • Performs malaria parasite culturing, controlled mosquito infections and mosquito microdissection;
  • Conducts routine molecular biological work such as isolation of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), real-time quantitative polymerase chain reactions (qRT PCR), protein analysis assays and immunofluorescence microscopy
  • Performs other laboratory duties as assigned
The candidate is required to interact with a large variety of staff and researchers including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and senior scientists, as needed for each responsibility.

PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term appointment of December 31, 2022 with the possibility for extension and the finalist will be required to pass an occupational health screening.

PLEASE NOTE: The primary work location for this position is Boston, MA and in order to be on Harvard payroll, you must reside in one of the following states – MA, NH, RI, ME, CT, VT, NY, or MD. Until our return to campus and full operational status, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process and position will take place in a slightly modified manner – including virtual interviews and a combination of remote and on-site (on campus in Boston) onboarding and lab work. The majority of the work, though, is expected to take place in person – in accordance with approved COVID-related guidelines and protocols.

Basic Qualifications

  • 2+ years of related experience required; a combination of education and experience may be considered

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:

  • BA/BS in biological sciences
  • Master's in entomology/vector biology is a plus
  • 2+ years directly-related work experience
  • Prior experience working in a BSL-2 lab
  • Previous laboratory experience in mosquito husbandry
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of working well within a laboratory team which includes post-doctoral scientists, graduate students and other research assistants

  • Awareness of and aptitude to appropriately and effectively understand, respect, and adapt to cultural and identity-based difference within group environments
  • Knowledge of and commitment to concepts and issues tied to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion
