JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The research group of Assistant Professor Stewart Mallory in the Department of Chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University seeks to fill two postdoctoral research positions in computational and theoretical soft materials. We are looking for highly motivated and creative postdoctoral researchers to study soft active matter systems in several application areas. Current research topics of interest include but are not limited to the design of tunable synthetic and biological active fluids, characterizing rare events in soft active matter systems, machine learning methods in active matter, and hierarchical self-assembly of active colloidal materials. There will also be opportunities to interact with other experimental and theoretical soft and active matter groups at Penn State. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in one or more of the following areas: complex fluids and soft matter systems, fluid and continuum mechanics, active matter, computer simulations and modeling, non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Previous experience in the study of colloidal dynamics and self-assembly is desirable but not necessary.

Applicants must have recently received or will receive a Ph.D. in an area broadly relevant to our research program by the time employment starts, such as a Ph.D. in Biophysics, Chemistry, Physics, Material Science or Engineering or a related discipline with molecular simulation or Monte Carlo methods expertise. The individual should be self-motivated and is expected to lead their own individual projects, as well as contribute to collaborative research efforts. There will be opportunities to interact and collaborate with other experimental and theoretical soft and active matter groups at Penn State and beyond.

Interested and qualified applicants must submit applications electronically to include a cover letter describing your research background to have prior training and research interests and a CV that includes a list of publications. Following a screening of initial application materials, candidates will be contacted by email asking for letters of reference to be sent.

The initial appointment is funded for one year from the hire date with a possibility of re-funding and is anticipated to last at least two years. All applicants will be encouraged to apply for independent funding. Review of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
