Westchester Community College was founded in 1946 as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in White Plains. In 1957, the County of Westchester bought the 360-acre John Hartford estate in Valhalla and designated 218 acres for the community college. Job Description:
Westchester Community College's English Department seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track instructor to teach writing, with a special emphasis on developmental and gateway courses (especially ENG 101). In addition to a teaching load of 12 contact hours per semester, the successful candidate is expected to hold eight office hours weekly, and to support the mission of the College and the department, participating and collaborating in departmental and College activities and initiatives (with the potential for future leadership).
Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Master's Degree in English or a closely related field, along with the equivalent of at least 1 year of college-level teaching experience, is required. Working knowledge of developments in the profession and the ability to put research and theory in composition/rhetoric and developmental education into practice is also required, as well as the ability to integrate new technologies and media into teaching and learning. All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A doctorate, evidence of at least 3 years of teaching experience at the college level, and research/scholarship are strongly preferred. Experience and expertise in working with dual enrollment programs and high school partnerships is a plus. Evidence of excellence in online education is also preferred.
