About the Department
As its mission, the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology strives to prepare today’s veterinary, undergraduate, and graduate students to respond to current and future challenges in both veterinary and human medicine. We serve national and global endeavors focused on food animal production, veterinary medicine and human medicine through excellence in teaching, high impact research and discovery, veterinary clinical sciences, and extension/engagement.
We orient our research to the One Health approach focused on the areas of pathology, immunology/infectious disease, farm and food animal medicine (swine, poultry and ruminant), and epidemiology/global health benefiting both animal and human populations.
Our high standards of excellence position us as leaders in the Veterinary College, North Carolina State University, and profession. The College has gained international recognition on the strength of its teaching, research, engagement, and patient care efforts and is ranked 3rd among the nation’s colleges of veterinary medicine in the current U.S. News & World Report survey.
Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. Instruction is in three departments—Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health and Pathobiology. In addition to the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, there are programs leading to master and doctoral degrees in several areas with numerous opportunities for specialization.

Essential Job Duties
The NC State College of Veterinary Medicine has established a multidisciplinary flagship One Health program in Global Health in recognition of the critical role played by veterinary medicine in addressing global challenges related to food security, zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, student education, animal welfare, sustainability, and public health.
The successful candidate will develop a strong independent interdisciplinary research program in their field of expertise. Research expertise is expected to enhance or complement existing areas of research within the department and college. Current areas of departmental research include the pathology of infectious diseases, infectious diseases of food animals (swine and ruminants), viral and respiratory diseases of poultry, musculoskeletal diseases of poultry, phenotypic and genotypic characterization of zoonotic pathogens as related to antimicrobial resistance, infectious disease, swine welfare, emerging parasitic disease(s) and toxicology and pharmacokinetic studies. The Department of Clinical Sciences also has a robust research program in companion and exotic animal diseases. The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences has complementary strengths in regenerative medicine, neurosciences, development and genomic approaches in cancer. Other areas of interest include development of diagnostic tests for use in the veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Candidates must have expertise and prior experience in the study of their field of expertise in developing countries especially as it related to improving food security via the livestock industry
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing global health education through core teaching in public and global health, including significant participation in the DVM course VMP 945 (Epidemiology and Public Health). The successful candidate will lead and coordinate the CVM Global Health Certificate program soliciting input and participation from CVM faculty interested in global health as well as facilitate service learning and research opportunities for veterinary students abroad. The successful candidate will also coordinate and lead several global health-focused selective(s), participate in the CBS Graduate Program-Population Medicine and Global Health through mentorship of graduate students and post docs, and they will coordinate and develop at least 2 graduate level courses in global health.
In alignment with the significant educational roles of this position, experience in curriculum development, basic training in instructional methods, and experience with program development and oversight are preferred. The successful candidate will work with faculty to develop courses and programs that serve to broaden global health and public health education offerings for students.
Domestic and international (overseas) travel for research, extension, and educational purposes is expected. Strong communication, presentation and writing skills are expected.
The successful candidate is also expected participate in service and outreach activities and coordinate activities with the newly appointed Director of Global Health at the University level.
Other Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work with faculty to develop courses and programs that serve to broaden global health and public health education offerings for students.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the department head.
Minimum Education and Experience
- A DVM degree and PhD degree are highly desirable. Applicants with DrPH/DPH or DVM with MPH degrees are also encouraged to apply.
Other Required Qualifications
- Ability to coordinate the CVM Certificate in Global Health and student travel internationally for research and service-learning experiences and provide opportunities and support for faculty to participate as mentors in the Certificate program in order to build capacity and expand the diversity of opportunities.
- Ability to provide didactic training to DVM and graduate students and students involved in summer research/experiential opportunities.

- International experience.
- Experience in curriculum development, basic training in instructional methods, and experience with program development and oversight
