The research conducted in this laboratory uses rats to examine individual differences in emotionality and relevance to mental illness, including substance abuse. We need assistance in executing both behavioral and basic neuroscience experiments. Duties will include overseeing and assisting with daily activities in the laboratory, supervising undergraduates, assisting graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with experiments, ordering laboratory supplies, maintaining breeding colonies and making sure everything is in good working order for the daily functioning of the lab.

Responsibilities include overseeing and assisting with multiple experiments, ordering laboratory materials, keeping laboratory records (e.g. chemical hygiene, radioactivity, biohazard and animal protocols) up-to-date, supervising undergraduate students, assisting graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and maintaining breeding colonies. Our behavioral assays include Pavlovian conditioning procedures (autoshaping), drug self-administration, conditioned place preference, and psychomotor sensitization. In addition, molecular techniques such as immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and radioimmunoassays are regularly used. Jugular catheterization surgeries and stereotaxic surgeries are performed on a regular basis. These combined approaches allow us to examine the neural circuitry underlying the behaviors of interest. The applicant will be expected to assist with implementation of study protocols, data analysis, and is expected to keep good records of experiments, results, etc. The applicant will also be expected to perform routine library work, including finding relevant literature.
