Position Focus:
This Research Associate (RA) position will be a critical part of the Powers Lab at the Yale University School of Medicine. The RA will be charged with design, implementation, and maintenance of the data, documentation, and code generated by this busy computational psychiatry lab. It is expected to be a hybrid position, both virtual and physically located at the Connecticut Mental Health Center.
Duties will include:
● Working with research staff including the PI (Dr. Powers), post-doctoral fellows, students, and other RAs to create a plan for data collection, organization/storage, and flow that maximizes ease of analysis.
● Creation of psychological and perceptual tasks using a variety of coding platforms including Matlab, Python, E-Prime and Javascript.
● Working with a variety of data collection platforms, including those involving online data collection, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electrophysiology (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG), and pupillometry.
1. Understanding, troubleshooting, and improving the lab’s existing data flow architecture.
2. Helping to design and implement cognitive and perceptual tasks.
3. Aiding in the transfer, organization, and maintenance of data from a variety of hardware and sources.
4. Troubleshooting problems in data flow or task functioning.
5. Maintaining lab coding infrastructure, including the lab organization (including repository, issue, project, milestone, team, and workflow/automation management) on GitHub.
Essential Duties
1. Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. 3. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. 4. Recruits study participants and ensures that subject recruitment and follow-up are completed per protocol procedures. 5. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May assist research and support staff. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.
Required Education and Experience
Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently, ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; good interpersonal skills.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Prior experience coding and project management in a technical (scientific) setting.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Experience with data transfer, storage, and analysis.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
B.A. or B.S, preferably in Computer Science, Cognitive Science, or related field. Experience using high-performance computing clusters/systems a plus.
