Position Focus:
The Assistant Director of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy (GS) is a two-year, fixed duration position in International Security Studies (ISS) at the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs, renewable until the appointment of the Brady-Johnson Professor of Grand Strategy. The Assistant Director of GS will provide academic support to the Interim Director of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy on an annual basis. The Assistant Director will help administer the yearlong “Studies in Grand Strategy” seminar, to include advice on curriculum and syllabus development and assigned readings, student advising on course assignments and required summer research project, grading student materials, and inviting special guests to participate in a wide range of course-affiliated activities. The Assistant Director will also assist the Interim Director with the admissions process for the Grand Strategy course and will help select the undergraduate and graduate students admitted to the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy. The Assistant Director will work closely with guest faculty and Brady-Johnson Distinguished Fellows in Grand Strategy to prepare their respective teaching segments, to include team-teaching class sessions with scholars and practitioners. The Assistant Director will provide advice and career development support to Henry Chauncey ’57 Postdoctoral Fellows in Grand Strategy within International Security Studies (ISS), to include assistance with organizing their weekly training workshops, inviting scholars across Yale and at peer schools to participate, and building and sustaining a network to support these promising young scholars as they navigate the job market. The Assistant Director will also support the Interim Director of GS and the Director of ISS in the selection of future postdoctoral fellows. In addition to part-time teaching in the yearlong Studies in Grand Strategy seminar, the Assistant Director will offer an additional course on a topic related to international affairs, history, or grand strategy for undergraduate and/or graduate students on an as-needed basis. In this case, the Assistant Director will receive a secondary appointment as Lecturer in Global Affairs or in a related academic department. Ph.D. in History, Political Science, or related subject required, with demonstrated high-quality scholarship related to grand strategy and global affairs.
Essential Duties
1. Oversees the advancement and growth of the program. Gives direction and leadership supporting the philosophy, mission, strategy, and annual goals and objectives. Assumes primary accountability for disseminating and publishing all program information to create public awareness and support of the program. 2. Works closely with leadership, internal and external colleagues, and community residents to further develop and implement strategic plans. 3. Identifies, solicits, and cultivates community partnerships and collaborations to assist in the development and growth of the program. Develops the metrics to identify and measure the success of the program. Responsible for measurements of grant success and related evaluation. 4. Assists in identifying and evaluating potential future funding sources, and contributes to the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program, including the annual submission and writing of all content areas and budgetary sections of grant applications. Develops and manages the program’s operating budget. 5. Develops the administrative infrastructure of the program. Manages human resource and administrative functions of the program, including staffing and hiring, supervision, performance development, counseling and discipline, if warranted. Oversees and manages information systems, facilities, and space needs. 6. Investigates, identifies, implements, and oversees the maintenance of systems to gather, track, and report information to support the initiatives of the program. Tracks all program activities and regularly informs leadership of progress on each initiative. Recommends structural or programmatic adjustments, changes or additions based on full knowledge of missions, goals, and objectives. 7. Initiates, designs, and manages the compilation of program communications; identifying outreach potential, and promoting philanthropic and collaborative support of the program. Contributes to the development and assists in the management of content on the program’s website and monitors all changes and additions to the editorial content. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability teaching at the College or University level.

Demonstrated ability working in and with archives and the libraries.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Superior written and oral communication skills.

Demonstrated ability with counseling and advising college and university level undergraduate and graduate students.

Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize, strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously. Strong organizational interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact well with faculty, students and staff.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
PhD in History, Political Science, or International Relations. Expertise in international history or the history of U.S. foreign relations is desirable. Administrative experience in academic programs at a university or college, particularly related to international relations or contemporary issues of domestic or global concern.
