About the Department
As the largest department within the Facilities Division Facilities Operations services the University’s 10 million square feet of teaching, research and administrative space and 2,440 acres of Ground and Transportation infrastructure. Using 803 budgeted positions and an annual budget of $57,000,000. Facilities Operations provides maintenance, custodial landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail and motor pool services for most of the University.
Essential Job Duties
This position will perform semi-skilled work in at least 2 mechanical trades involved in general maintenance and repair of buildings, related equipment and steam boiler, HVAC and/or electrical systems at the College of Veterinary Medicine and the surrounding campus.
Performs a limited variety of recurring and related tasks & functions using easily understood steps/processes/functions/ applications to perform corrective and preventive maintenance or construction of facilities. This includes sub-journey level work in trades such as electrical, plumbing and HVAC.
Other Responsibilities
This job requires the employee to carry on-call pager.
Must be able to work overtime and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications
- Must be able to effectively communicate verbally with supervisors and the general public.
- Needs to understand verbal and written instructions, and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
- Working knowledge of correct System Operation.
- Follow instructions and timeline of PM sheet.
- Assist other mechanics as necessary.
- Inspect and record operating conditions and properly maintain tools.
- Uphold unit safety standards and critical role duties.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years of experience in the trades areas of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical.
- High school diploma or GED
- Vocation or Technical School
Required License or Certification
- Valid Driver’s License required.
- NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire.
