Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Associate Provost and Dean is responsible for the facilitation and support of a decentralized operation which offers over 80 doctoral programs and over 100 masters programs, and enrolls nearly 10,000 students on the College Park campus, at off-site locations and online.
This individual plays a leadership role in representing and seeking support for graduate education, in advocating for interdisciplinary and enriched graduate student experiences across units and programs, and in promoting the stature of and support for our programs. In cooperation with academic colleges, schools, departments, and programs, and with the Graduate Council and the University Senate, the Associate Provost and Dean is responsible for facilitating the creation and implementation of policies and procedures that promote excellence in graduate education. The Associate Provost and Dean is also responsible for coordinating and enhancing funding and awards for graduate students, facilitating progress-to-degree and, in collaboration with the Office of the Registrar and academic units, providing administrative support to facilitate graduate student recruitment, admissions, and records. In addition, the Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School oversees resources and support services for graduate students that enable successful and positive graduate studies experiences.
The Associate Provost and Dean chairs the Graduate Council, oversees the administrative staff of approximately 25 staff of the Graduate School, works with associate deans and directors and coordinators of graduate study in the colleges, schools, and programs to coordinate common needs, oversees university-wide graduate training programs, and meets with graduate student organizations periodically. This individual will also serve on the Deans’ Forum, the Council of Deans, and the Provost’s office Administrative Council. As a member of the Administrative Council, the Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School advises the Senior Vice President and Provost on matters related to graduate education at UMD and more broadly, as well as other matters as requested by the Provost.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must be current University of Maryland faculty at the rank of Professor. Demonstrated capacity for creative and effective leadership and significant administrative experience. Strong collaborative leader who is well respected internally and externally. Demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership, and a dedication to fostering the goals of diversity in promoting academic excellence. Experience managing a complex budget. Superior verbal and written communication skills, and a high level of discretion. Ability to work with many groups of people on campus and in the external community. Ability to support and encourage faculty and staff in their efforts to deliver excellent programs and opportunities for students. Ability to work productively with graduate student organizations.
