About the Department
The College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University is one of the top ranked veterinary colleges in North America. The Departments of Clinical Science and Molecular Biomedical Sciences are the primary departments on campus performing research on biomedical approaches to therapy in animals and humans. North Carolina State University and the surrounding area have many enriching opportunities. Research Triangle Park, containing numerous pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, is located within the Research Triangle formed by Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, which are home to NC State University, Duke University, and UNC-Chapel Hill, respectively. Raleigh is located in central North Carolina, and both coastal and mountain communities are within a few hours’ drive. The Triangle community of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill is active and culturally diverse and has been cited as one of the most desirable places to live in the United States. The quality of life in Central North Carolina is excellent, with many stimulating cultural, sporting, and outdoor activities.
The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is nationally and internationally known for our translational research. This position will only enhance our reputation further and would expand it to include new approaches. Moreover, use of this position to build the Translational Predictive Biology cluster will strengthen existing faculty with cross-interests in this area and build additional bridges to the College of Engineering (ISE) and the College of Sciences (MATH/STATS).
The college is committed to practicing inclusivity, making community a priority and promoting innovation. We embrace effective leadership and we champion personal and professional growth.
Essential Job Duties
NC State University is recruiting five faculty to play a central role in building a Center for Translational Predictive Biology. The five incoming faculty are expected to synergize with existing faculty to build an internationally-recognized center focused on developing integrated systems and analytical methods that can predict in vivo responses from in vitro systems. Areas of interest include mathematical modeling/machine learning, organoid biology, microphysiological systems (organ-on-chip), molecular pharmacology, and whole animal physiology.
As part of this initiative, the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences invites applications for a state funded tenure track position at the ASSISTANT PROFESSOR level in ORGANOID BIOLOGY with a strong background in quantitative molecular and cellular methods and interested in applying their expertise to develop and apply new organoid-based models for predictive biology. Applicants should have experience in developing and integrating innovative organoid-based approaches, a record of rigorous quantitative molecular and cellular methods, a track record of collaborative and interdisciplinary research, and interest or experience with working with multiple animal models (rodents, pigs, humans). Organ system(s) is open but examples of potential areas include the use of intestinal organoids to predict drug absorption, use of liver organoids for safety/toxicity predictions, and/or use of organoids as models of healthy and diseased states.
The new faculty member will be expected to establish a successful interdisciplinary research program, and actively participate in the veterinary and graduate teaching programs. This position will have the opportunity to complement, and collaborate with, other members of the Translational Predictive Biology Cluster, the existing faculty in the college, and participate in the NC State Comparative Medicine Institute (
CMI), located on the veterinary college campus. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to interact with clinical faculty in a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital and outstanding research faculty affiliated with the College of Veterinary Medicine, the
CMI, and relevant existing faculty clusters working in related areas such as Modeling the Living Embryo (
MLE), High-dimensional Integration of Biological Systems (
HIBS) and Synthetic and Systems Biology (
SSB) cluster. The specific teaching requirements will be tailored to the expertise of the individual and the needs of the college.
Other Responsibilities
Teaching is an essential component of the position and can include didactic lectures in the DVM and/or PhD curriculum, participation in problem solving courses, journal clubs, seminar series and graduate and post-doctoral training.
