Primary Function of Organizational Unit – North Carolina State University Extension Forestry believes in sharing our knowledge with the people of North Carolina and other states and in supporting the economic prosperity of local communities through the wise use of its forests and natural resources. Our Extension and outreach specialists work hard to make sure that the general public, landowners, community leaders, industry professionals and others have an opportunity to learn of new discoveries and techniques affecting their lives in a timely manner. We do this by providing educational programs and professional services that reach people in a variety of different ways.
Essential Job Duties
This position will support the Extension and research programs of the Forest Health Lab at NC State University. These programs primarily focus on invasive forest pests, such as the spotted lanternfly, Asian longhorned beetle, emerald ash borer, Callery pear, elm zigzag sawfly, and more.
Primary duties include:
- Documenting the phenology of the pest in North Carolina
- Creating Extension materials
- Working closely with State and Federal agencies
- Regular travel and field work, primarily in the form of monitoring, life stage data collection, trap setting, and insect dissections.
- Use ArcGIS apps to document invasive pest locations in the field
- Regularly communicate with the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services
- Creating and updating Extension materials and participating in outreach and education activities

Minimum Education and Experience
BS in Entomology or related field plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Microscopy skills
- General knowledge of insect morphology and life cycles
- Excellent communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- MS in Entomology, Forestry, or a related field.
- Detail-oriented and able to stay well organized.
- Experience working directly with State and Federal agencies.
- Experience working in the field in adverse environmental conditions.
- Experience using tablets, specifically ArcGIS applications (e.g., Survey123)

- Valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
